Hon. Joseph Akinlaja, the Leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South-West Caucus at the Federal House of Representatives has dumped the Party for Zenith Labour Party, nigeriancablenewsonline.com reports
Akinlaja made the official declaration in Abuja on Friday, September 28, 2018 at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja in tandem with the decision of a former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.
Former National Chairman of Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu MNI, OFR was reported to be the party's acting National Chairman.
Also present at the meeting was Dr. Kayode Ajulo, a former National secretary of Labour Party, among other high profile politicians.
Akinlaja who is seeking reelection into the House of Representatives for the Ondo East and West Federal Constituency seat will now be contesting on the platform of Zenith Labour Party.
Similarly, Dr Mimiko who had earlier declared his presidential ambition whilst he was in Labour Party would equally be making Zenith Labour Party as a veritable to pursue his dream.
Both leaders are of the belief that the effect of the current economic reality, unprecedented level of division, distrust at individual and communal levels, were of great concern to them.
They further added that the ability to envision great ideas and demonstrable track record, rather than place and circumstances of birth should be the most compelling basis for investing candidates with power.
Akinlaja is a ranking member of Federal House of Representatives, representing Ondo East/West Federal Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream, a position he's been holding since the inception of the 8th Assembly.
Before he delved into active politics he was a Labour leader of note. He rose to the position of Deputy National President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and General Secretary of Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.
After that, the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD a branch of NUPENG) made him their Grand Patron/Technical Consultant. At some point, Akinlaja was Deputy National Chairman of Labour Party.
