As a way of celebrating the beginning of a new year, Ondo State Governor, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has set free 12 prisoners who have served portions of their sentences.
This was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Yemi Olowolabi which was seen by SUNSHINE HERALD.
According to the statement, the prisoners were set free after the recommendation by the State Advisory Council on Prerogative and Mercy to the governor.
"This is in exercise of the power conferred on him by Paragraph (d) of sub section (1) of Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
"In his letter, dated 27th December, 2017, and addressed to the Comptroller of Prisons, Governor Akeredolu advised that the affected prisoners be released.
"The governor advised the affected prisoners to make use of the opportunity of their release to turn a new leaf and engage legal and positive activities that will contribute to the development of the country," part of the statement read.
