A newly appointed vice chancellor of University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Sunday Lale has asked students who failed to meet up with a three-month deadline for school fees payment to defer admission.
In just about few months of his administration, he introduced some policies forcing both lecturers, HODs and as well students to adopt to these new policies. Of course, these policies were not favourable as they affect mostly students.
One of the policies that's causing ripples is early payment of school fees. This policy was backed up by certain consequences if violated or not abided with.
Although, it was publicly announced but the notice for the end of payment of school fees was however short.
The V.C insisted that students who had not paid their fees before the certain date ( the close of fees portal) would have themselves to blame. Quite unfair!
This notice lasted only for about three months. Lots of students couldn't afford to meet up with the deadline considering the economic situation in the country.
The portal was closed anyways. The V.C who was aware of the rate of poor response had the portal shut down. When that was done, he put a notice that students who couldn't meet up payments should pick a deferment, fill it to indicate their withdrawal of that particular session. It was compulsory. It means a student who didn't pay his/her fees should go home and resume the next year. One full year to defer.
This caused chaos and confusion in the school. Students were in their confused states. Even when the students union tried to do a peaceful protest, the V.C got the riot police. Since then, nobody was able to do anything but cause of the fear of being put in prison or killed.
The period of exams drew close, students hoped and prayed the V.C would have a change of heart but no, he didn't. All efforts put was to no avail.
Some students were forced to pick up the deferment form and eventually withdrew because there was no hope forthcoming. A student who didn't pay the fees was automatically opted out from taking exams
Well, some students deferred while some still took the exams hoping a way out would spring forth as they only hope and pray to God for that. But presently, students are still stuck on this hopeless situation and are crying for help!
