To draw international football competitions and athletics events to Ondo State, the state government is set to construct the abandoned Akure International Stadium.
The stadium was initiated by the administration of Late Dr. Olusegun Agagu.
Speaking with The Hope in Akure at the weekend, the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Rt. Hon. Taofik Olawale Abdussalam said that the administration of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is poised to complete the abandoned stadium, so that the state rising profile in sports can be annexed.
The Commissioner posited that the vision of the state government is to annex the potentials of sports men and women in the state by building an edifice that can host international sports, stressing that the present stadium cannot bring to bear the vision of Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on sports in the state.
His words: "It is quite a pity that Ondo State since its creation has no international sports centre that can host big meets, but the present government headed by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is poised to complete the abandoned new stadium embarked upon by Dr. Olusegun Agagu.
"The vision of the government is a centre that can host international football events and athletics competitions of international standard. This is presently lacking in the state and in the new year the state government will be trying to complete the new stadium in Akure.
"The administration is committed towards developing the Infrastructure in the state and one of the priorities of the state government is the new stadium. The stadium was initiated by Dr. Agagu and the essence of the completion is to develop sports in the state.
"Ondo State is noted for its prowess in sports and to catch our teeming youths in the state, sports is to give them sense of belonging. Completing the stadium will make them to embrace sports and it will also showcase the potentials of Ondo State to the outside world."
Speaking on Infrastructural development of the state, Rt. Hon Abdussalam warned that henceforth it is an offence to destroy any property of the state government.
According to him, the state government will soon enact a public property law that would make it an offence to destroy government properties.
"It is now destroy government property and replace it immediately. The spate of destroying government properties is much in the state and since it is owned in trust for all the people, government cannot allow this to continue".
The Commissioner said that Infrastructural renovation of government properties have commenced with the renovation of Government House, stressing that others would soon get face-lift
Abdussalam maintained that the state government meant the best for the state, adding that it has programmes that would move the state forward.
He added that the government headed by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is poised to give good governance, transparency and accountability to the people of Ondo State and urged the people of the state to support the government always.
