Wife of Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Akeredolu has blamed lack of data for causalities and those suffering from breast cancer in the country as the bane of the dreaded disease in the country.
This, she said had made it difficult for international donor agencies to come to the aid of those afflicted by the deadly disease.
Speaking at a press conference to herald 20th anniversary of Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) and 3rd International Breast Cancer symposium, Mrs Akeredolu also blamed ignorance, ill-equipped hospitals as issues which had complicated breast cancers in Nigeria.
Mrs. Akeredolu who said over 4,000 persons would participate in the symposium on how to prioritize breast cancer, urged breast cancer patients not to lay the blame of their predicament on the doorsteps of witches.
She said: "They prefer spiritual help and the hospital is always the last point of call, they only turn up in a clinic when the disease has eaten them up, when nothing can be done to save them," saying early detection of breast cancer would go a long way to improve breast cancer survival as "this remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control."
She also stressed the need for more awareness programme on the disease especially among the young school girls, disclosing her determination to spread the awareness campaign to the grassroots.
