Wayne Rooney reveals why he quit Manchester United

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he left Manchester United to return to Everton because he did not play enough under Jose Mourinho last season.

During a press conference on Monday, Rooney said he needed to leave the club to get more playing time elsewhere.

"I have played for my whole career. It was frustrating.

"It was the first time in my career that I haven't but I needed to play.

"I was captain of Manchester United and I had to keep myself positive around the place. Some people will accept playing every few weeks but I couldn't.

"It hadn't gone stale but I needed to play more games.

"I didn't play that often last season and I need to do that to be at my best.

"It was the right time for me to leave and play somewhere else"‎, he said

Rooney also insisted he was not coming to "a retirement home", but has a point to prove.

He added: "I always play with a point to prove. I want to win – I'm not coming to a retirement home.

"I feel good – not fit at the minute – but that will build up in the next few weeks."
