Food poisoning: Man, 63 escapes death in Ondo

A 63-year-old man, Alhaji Nasiru Akinlosotu, miraculously escaped death in his house located at Adetomowo street Ondo town, after surviving an alleged attempt by a teenage domestic maid to poison his food.

Narrating his ordeal to Journalists in Ondo town, the victim, a medicine seller stated that the domestic maid, a 14-year-old girl, was asked by his wife Mrs. Sikirat Akinlosotu to prepare beans for the three of them during which she secretly added a powdery material use for killing rats into the food.

Alhaji Akinlosotu who described his survival as an act of God, stated that the suspect, a primary four pupil in one of the public primary schools in Ondo town who has been living with the family since 2015 gave no sign of her sinister intention while serving the food.

He explained further that he never had any incline of danger that lies ahead as he immediately deeped spoon into the food, it was when he was about to swallow it that he perceived an offensive odour and a non-pleasant taste emanating from the food.

The physically distraught man explained further that subsequently, he vomited the beans and called the suspect to inquire from her why the food was like that, he added that all efforts made by him to get a positive response from the teenage girl proved abortive as she maintained her ground that there was nothing wrong with the food.

The victim explained further that it was at that juncture that he raised an alarm which attracted people in the neighbourhood to his house.

"It was in the course of interrogation by the residents in the neighborhood that the house maid confessed that she grinded the medicine meant for rat that was bought few days ago by my wife and sprinkled its content into my own share of the food.

"She later stated that she decided to add poison into my food in retaliation to the correction which I made to her when she committed an offence in the house. After the confession, I contacted my wife, Mrs. Sikiratu Akinlosotu, through her telephone and narrated the incident to her.

"Upon her arrival in the house, she decided to report the matter at the Yaba Divisional Police station in Ondo town for further investigation into the matter," he stated.

When our correspondent visited the police station, the suspect was seen with the alleged poisoned beans in a plate alongside with the victim and his wife been interrogated by the police.
