Wife of Ondo State Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has called for a legislative backing to strengthen the safety and security of corps members at various locations in the country, just as she called for upward review of their monthly allowance.
She made this known in Akure during an interview with newsmen.
Mrs. Akeredolu, who described the National Youth Service Corps as a national integration tool, said there is need to urgently address the challenges facing the scheme, so as to keep it in line with the present day reality.
The First Lady also implored the corps members to be more patriotic, stressing that it is a period to give back to the nation and a time for sacrifice, while calling on the people to recognise and appreciate the impact of the scheme on the society.
She said there is need to re-evaluate its programmes, and ascertain what needs to be done to forestall corps members becoming victims of circumstances and ugly incidents.
she also called for increment in the corps members allowance in order to compensate their service to humanity, exhibit care and boost their welfare.
She advised that state governments should be made to sign undertakings for the security of lives of the corps members, while those sabotaging their safety should be sanctioned, so as not to compromise their welfare and safety.
The wife of the Governor noted that she will continue to ensure that youths are empowered and as such, she has identified and is set to roll out lots of programmes to expose them to an array of opportunities during the Akeredolu-led administration.
She said she will continue to create fora for youths to develop their talents and achieve success in their chosen careers
